12 hours on snowshoes

Mr. Digernes, Mr. Servoss and myself had big plans for this January hike. However, it did not go as planned! Our goal was to take the route Avdalen to Stølsmaradalen and spend the night in a mountain lodge far from civilization. This route is not that far, about 11 km., but it is a high climb up to around 1100 m.a.s.l. and we expected deep snow. We decided to go Avdalskori to get to Avdalen mountain farm and walked further up from there.

The snow became deeper and deeper as we climbed higher and at around 800 m.a.s.l. we took on snowshoes.

Morale was high and we leave behind us a long way but at some point we unfortunately lost the T-marks. We tried hard to find it and spent a lot of energy going up and down on the mountainside. Hit by nightfall we had no choice but to turn and go back to Avdalen mountain farm.

I cannot but admit that this is the most tiring hike I have done in my life. We arrived Avdalen mountain farm approx. 11:00 p.m. and then we had trudged on snowshoes for 12 hours straight. After a quick meal, we crashed and instantly fell asleep. Better luck next time and we will wait for the spring…

The last three pictures are taken on my way home over Filefjell mountain pass.
